Local business leader: Catskill, N.Y. ‘Renaissance’ unfolding

After more than three decades living and working in Catskill, N.Y. Don Gibson is comfortable characterizing the influx of new businesses and arts initiatives to town as a Renaissance.

The president and CEO of The Bank of Greene County says he began to notice a change about three years ago and has continued to be impressed by the level of development taking place since.

“It’s a Renaissance. It has taken on a life of its own,” he says. “We’ve had a resurgence of new restaurants and shops, there’s the Bridge Street Theater. It all ties together.

“LUMBERYARD is a nice fit with the community. The timing couldn’t be better.”

The Bank of Greene County saw value in Catskill, N.Y. early on. The independently owned bank was founded in Catskill, N.Y. more than 127 years ago, Gibson said.

It operates four offices within the Village of Catskill and is a publicly traded company that is owned in part by shareholders and in part by Catskill, N.Y. residents.

Gibson, who began working for the bank after finishing college 29 years ago, said he has always enjoyed living in the area with his family — even as the effects of the 2008 recession were hitting the community hard.

The difficulties of years past make the growing economy of today even sweeter, said Gibson.

He credits the change to Catskill, N.Y. residents whose resilience and open-mindedness have been so integral to the success of The Bank of Greene County.

“It’s really the people of Catskill, N.Y.,” he said. “It’s unique. The people of Catskill, N.Y. are receptive to new people coming in. They appreciate a nice mix.”
